\nCelebrating our global alumni: Chia Patino, BM ’90.[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”100491″]Ecuadorian composer and stage director Chia Patino (BM\u201990), who enjoys a celebrated global career as a stage director, and last year joined the music faculty at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Mark Kaczmarczyk, Director of Development, had the opportunity to interview her and captured her musical journey: \u201cComposition and directing are essentially the same thing. One is written down on the page, and it pops when the orchestra is there. The other rises up and vertical, but if you want to have the audience look stage right, or listen to a flute solo, it’s the same process. The biggest problem (as a composer) is timing, so (as a stage director, that is) it\u2019s solved in opera. The thing with opera is when it captures you, it never leaves you. I never expected I\u2019d become a real stage director. You plan, then life happens.\u201d<\/em>– Chia Patino<\/p>\n

What’s your earliest memory as a child?<\/b>\u00a0I remember being very young, maybe five or six, and there was this competition I heard in Latin America\u00a0(OTI), similar to Eurovision, and I recall hearing another child around my age singing a song. I heard\u00a0them sing and immediately thought \u201cI want to write a song for that\u201d. My Grandmother owned a piano and it arrived to our home soon after. Piano lessons followed, for me and my three siblings.<\/p>\n

Share with us your story from Ecuador to Louisville<\/b>. In those years there was a relationship with Quito, Ecuador, which\u00a0is the sister city with Louisville. Richard Spalding (music faculty, emeritus), was the head of the Sister Cities program. Back then we had students from Montpellier, Quito, Mainz, and Africa in the program, which was fantastic. My older sister (Veronica, BM 89) received the first Sister Cities Scholarship, was a piano pedagogy major, and studied with a teacher she adored: \u00a0Mrs. Doris Keyes. I was subsequently awarded the scholarship while at UofL, was given a host family, and every little thing of support you needed was provided. Mrs. Keyes became a life mentor for me.<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_empty_space empty_h=”5″][vc_empty_space empty_h=”3″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”189475″]What’s your fondest memory of the School of Music? <\/b>I remember the first day I walked into the Music Library, I was overwhelmed! Back home in Ecuador there were maybe three of four books on composition, but at the School of Music I was able to access so many scores, courtesy of the\u00a0Grawemeyer\u00a0collection. The library staff were extremely supportive, and I would go in and just listen to recordings-it blew my mind. The idea of a \u201cpractice room\u201d, a solitary space to do nothing but practice, also blew my mind. In Ecuador, there are no such things as practice rooms. Mrs. Keyes taught me how to listen to sounds. My first year I studied with Claude Baker (former Professor of Composition, UofL, and Indiana University), who was instrumental in my early success and subsequent admission to Indiana University. We were literally starving artistically, and now I realize that the faculty identified that passion in me. For my senior recital I was able to utilize almost 85% of the students in the School of Music as dancers and instrumentalists; the intimate size and nature of the school and faculty were so supportive.<\/p>\n

Tell us about your unique journey from position to stage direction to opera.<\/b>\u00a0Composition is a very lonely thing. Early on, composers believed in \u00a0sturm\u00a0und\u00a0drang<\/i>, (a German phrase meaning \u201cstorm and stress\u201d, referring to a literary movement of the 18th century), and my music was not like that. Composition drives you into this vortex. Now that I\u2019m mature I feel in a healthier mental place,\u00a0I really have something to say so\u00a0I may come back to it. While at Bloomington, I decided to write an opera. I took a play writing class and every theater production class, movement and direction, so I could understand what makes for good theater. That is how it started…<\/p>\n

You were Director of the National Theater of Ecuador for a decade, you’ve been invited to guest stage direct at the Aspen Music Festival, and around the world. In 2024 you were invited to join the music faculty at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. At the UofM you mentor young, emerging singers, trying to find their voice. What’s your advice to young musicians today?<\/b><\/p>\n

Today people are writing music on their computers, via a program, and not with their ears. if you\u2019re writing in a\u00a0library\u00a0you cannot be writing with your heart. In Louisville I learned how to write sounds down and actually imagine them, hear them… it has to be intimate: between a composer and his\/her imagination. (big warning into\u00a0writing\u00a0on a computer program that plays back immediately…) Young students may feel free, but they are limited by the computer program, instead of embracing their vision. Read! Explore! Go to a museum! Consume all the art you can! Claude Baker, Fred Fox and Eugene O\u2019Brien would give me lists of books, plays and poetry to read. I loved that! I was pushed to discover and expand!\u00a0 Decide what makes you happy as a musician, because we have our emotions so raw and out of control, especially when we\u2019re young. Hang on and don\u2019t panic. If music makes you happy, find the way to make a living out of it, but keep an eye for doors that may open where you don\u2019t expect them.<\/p>\n

The full slate of 2025 special events, along with full season casting will be announced at a later date.<\/p>\n

Puccini\u2019s \u201cTosca\u201d<\/strong><\/em> directed by Louisa Proske opens the Festival. Joseph Colaneri conducts a cast that includes Michelle Bradley, Yongzhao Yu, and Greer Grimsley.<\/p>\n

Nach dieser Premiere der Cat\u00e1n-Oper mit dem Libretto von Marcela Fuentes-Berain<\/strong>, die aus dem magischen Realismus von Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez<\/strong> in seinem Roman \u201eDie Liebe in den Zeiten der Cholera\u201c sch\u00f6pfte, f\u00e4llt es einem schwer zu verstehen, warum das Werk erst nun in Spanien zu erleben ist, und dazu noch auf den vom Festland weit entfernten Kanarischen Inseln, die dem Amazonas aber immerhin etwas n\u00e4her sind. Esta \u00f3pera, cuyas funciones en el Auditorio de Tenerife han supuesto su estreno en Espa\u00f1a, tiene una orquestaci\u00f3n brillante y llena de colorido, adem\u00e1s de una escritura vocal que permite mucho lucimiento a los cantantes. Otra interesante obra que ha presentado \u00d3pera de Tenerife en esta temporada, en este caso, del compositor, escritor y profesor mexicano Daniel Cat\u00e1n (1949-2011), ha sido Florencia en el Amazonas, programada por primera vez en Espa\u00f1a. La obra, que acumula casi una veintena de montajes desde su estreno en 1996 en Houston, \u00fanicamente sumaba dos presentaciones en Europa, concretamente en Alemania y Suiza. Florencia demostr\u00f3 la pasi\u00f3n y originalidad que confer\u00eda este compositor a sus obras, las cuales luchan por mantenerse en el repertorio. El libreto pertenece a la escritora mexicana Marcela Fuentes Berain y refleja ese movimiento de la literatura iberoamericana conocido como realismo m\u00e1gico.<\/p>\n

Para la directora de escena Chia Pati\u00f1o la selva y el Amazonas son lugares que despiertan miedo, luces, sombras y una infinidad de sonidos, pero tambi\u00e9n sue\u00f1os. Con Florencia en el Amazonas, \u00d3pera de Tenerife se introduce en las composiciones latinoamericanas. \u201cLove in the Time of Cholera\u201d\u00a0and \u201cOne Hundred Years of Solitude\u201d\u00a0<\/em>are some of the works by Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez that have inspired this story by Marcela Fuentes-Berain. This musical homage to\u00a0Gabo<\/em>\u00a0and his imaginary arrives at Tenerife with the Ecuadorian director Ch\u00eda Pati\u00f1o. She opts for real visual effects and moves away from the usual audio-visual resources, “which have been overused during these two years of pandemic”.<\/p>\n

During this boat trip at the beginning of the 20th<\/sup>\u00a0century to Manaus, Brazil, all want to hear the diva Florencia Grimaldi on her return to her homeland that was constructed in the middle of the jungle. Pati\u00f1o explains that “we will follow this singer who longs for the past, without being very clear whether she exists or not… Is it a dream? “We have a whole ship coming to see her and I want to create doubt on the viewer as to whether the singer is real or not” explains the director, for whom it is very important to “feel the Amazon jungle, the way it affects people and vice versa”.<\/p>\n

Pati\u00f1o leads this stage show and completes her team with the North American stage designer Izmir Ickbal, the Brazilian costume designer Felype de Lima, the American lighting designer Erin Fleming and the Spanish designer and puppet master Alejandra Prieto.<\/p>\n

“I wanted to explore our relationship with death, especially in this time of COVID. In Latin America, the pandemic has been very bad\u2014everyone knows someone who has died from it. I lost an uncle at the very beginning of the pandemic. Then I lost a good friend. On the night, I learned that my friend had it, I prayed for his life. I had not prayed since I was 15. I started praying because he has three kids and I really wanted him to pull through. I got reports from his brother and from his wife: he was diabetic, he was connected to a ventilator, his kidneys were in bad shape, his liver was damaged, his eyesight affected, and his lungs had collapsed. If he could come back, what type of life would he have? How would his family cope? He would have a tough life. For me, I thought it best that he pass away.”<\/em><\/p>\n

She passed away at her home in South Bend, Indiana, on Friday, December 10, 2021 at 4:45pm.<\/p>\n

Born in Caracas in 1955, Carmen studied piano and composition in Venezuela before moving to the United States, where she completed degrees at Indiana University in conducting and piano, including a Doctor of Music with Letter of Distinction in 1989. From 1987\u20131989 she served as Music Director for the National Chorus of Spain but returned to the US to serve as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Visiting Music Director of the Handel Society at Dartmouth College. In 1992 she joined the faculty of Indiana University as Professor of Music and Director of the LAMC and the Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, serving in these roles for two decades. She also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Latin American and Caribbean Studies and was a Faculty Fellow with the Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities. In 2010 she received the Tracy Sonneborn Distinguished Professor Award for Creativity in Research and Teaching. There will be two versions of this project. In the first concert on Saturday, September 18 at 7:30 pm,<\/strong><\/em><\/a> Dreaming\/Undreaming<\/strong><\/em> will deliver the relationship between videos and the music originally designed by the project creators. In the second concert on Sunday, September 19 at 3 pm<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, the audience will be asked to select the order of the videos to accompany the music. Adventurous audiences are encouraged to attend both versions, to enjoy the diversity and surprises of perception once the video sequence is changed between them. All ticket-holders will be able to enter a website afterwards and watch both the Princeton and the Chicago versions of Dreaming\/Undreaming to compare the experiences! (ESPA) Dreaming \/ Undreaming, originalmente encargado y estrenado por el Festival de Princeton en junio de 2017<\/strong> <\/a>con excelentes cr\u00edticas como un video musical art\u00edstico, se presentar\u00e1 en Ear Taxi<\/strong> <\/a>en una nueva versi\u00f3n de medios mixtos, con la pianista Natasha Stojanovska<\/strong> tocando en vivo mientras los videos art\u00edsticos de Camilla Tassi<\/strong> y Ryan Belock<\/strong> se proyectan en tiempo real, con dramaturgia de Chia Pati\u00f1o<\/strong> y movimiento de Alexa Capareda<\/strong>. Habr\u00e1 dos versiones de este proyecto. En el primer concierto el s\u00e1bado 18 de septiembre a las 7:30 pm<\/strong>, Dreaming \/ Undreaming<\/strong> entregar\u00e1 la relaci\u00f3n entre los videos y la m\u00fasica originalmente dise\u00f1ada por los creadores del proyecto. En el segundo concierto el domingo 19 de septiembre a las 15 horas<\/strong>, se pedir\u00e1 al p\u00fablico que seleccione el orden de los videos para acompa\u00f1ar la m\u00fasica.
